exoskeleton (from Greek έξω, éxō “outer” and σκελετός, skeletós “skeleton”[1]) is the external skeleton that supports and protects an animal’s body, in contrast to the internal skeleton (endoskeleton) of, for example, a human. In usage, some of the larger kinds of exoskeletons are known as “shells“. Examples of animals with exoskeletons include insects such as grasshoppers and cockroaches, and crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters, as well as the shells of certain sponges and the various groups of shelled molluscs, including those of snails, clams, tusk shells, chitons and nautilus. Some animals, such as the tortoise, have both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton. WIKI
Many New advances in material science as well as bio-engineering have led to the rise of new applications for the exoskeleton concept.
A powered exoskeleton (also known as power armor, powered armor, powered suit, exoframe, hardsuit, or exosuit)[1] is a wearable mobile machine that is powered by a system of electric motors, pneumatics, levers, hydraulics, or a combination of technologies that allow for limb movement with increased strength and endurance.[2] Its design aims to provide back support, sense the user’s motion, and send a signal to motors which manage the gears. The exoskeleton supports the shoulder, waist and thigh, and assists movement for lifting and holding heavy items, while lowering back stress.[3]
A powered exoskeleton differs from a passive exoskeleton in the fact that a passive exoskeleton is not powered by a system of electric motors, pneumatics, levers, hydraulics, or a combination of technologies. However, similar to a powered exoskeleton, it does give mechanical benefits to the user.[4][5] WIKI
Protective exoskeletons are a new trend among troop protection in the armed forces and the science leading to these new techniques in protection have cross-pollinated to other industries such as power-sports and recreational use. Motorcyclists are one example of these new applications.
The exoskeleton concept has continuously evolved and stands to create new sci-fi style entertainment and bring new sports concepts to the market.

Eventually this concept would lead to real-life invention and it has! See FURRION INC. ! ProsthesisMechRacing.
Though the “mecha” concept is truly unwieldy for most applications it demonstrates how the human inside the machine can be protected from great harm under enormous pressures or impact. This will undoubtedly educate our sciences and create better crash protection for riders of motorcycles or hover-crafts or airships.. whatever you can think of. This technology is here to stay. Prepare to see it on your block soon!
