The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (chassis code W 198) is a two-seat sports car that was produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1954 to 1957 as a gullwinged coupé and from 1957 to 1963 as a roadster. The designation “SL” is an abbreviation of the German term “super-leicht,” meaning “super-light,” a reference to the car’s racing-bred lightweight construction. The 300 SL was introduced to the American market at the suggestion of Max Hoffman, Mercedes-Benz’s United States importer at the time, who recognized the potential demand for a high-performance sports car among American buyers. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL remains a highly sought-after classic car and is celebrated for its performance, design, and technological advancements.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing was powered by the 3.0-liter M198 straight-six engine, mated to a four-speed manual box, producing 222 horsepower (215 metric horsepower) and 202 pound-feet (274 Newton meters) of torque, pushing it all the way to a top speed of 134 mph (217 kph). The engine had to pull a lightweight structure, weighing only 3,300 pounds (1,500 kilograms).
Long gone is now that 3.0-liter straight-six, which made the Mercedes act like a true sports car, as it has been replaced by an electric motor. To turn the iconic 300 SL Gullwing into a restomodded EV, the S-Klub team bought a perfectly functional Tesla Model 3, chopped off the body, squeezed it a little bit, and put the Mercedes body on top of it.
